How to learn Excel?
22 March 2026
Excel dla początkujących

Each of us has some beginning behind us. The first swimming lesson, debut in front of an audience, or starting in running competitions. We certainly remember our internships and practices that allowed us to gain experience. However, there are sometimes areas where we should improve our skills - learning Excel from scratch or basic Excel functions are common tasks on our to-do list.

EXCEL BASICS STEP BY STEP.

Rome wasn't built in a day! You don't have to put pressure on yourself to learn how Excel works in office work in one day. Set realistic goals for yourself, e.g., today I will learn about one topic - =VLOOKUP - how it works, when to use it, what to pay attention to in order not to make a mistake. The most important aspect of learning Excel will be its practice. It's good to prepare a few sample data sets on which you would like to practice. They don't have to be related to your business, but a list of countries, dishes, people, or items that you have in sight. Below we have prepared an example that will help you start familiarizing yourself with Excel - it is a step-by-step Excel formula, which will guide you through the mentioned practice and help you get used to the sheets.

VLOOKUP - WHAT IS IT AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR?

VLOOKUP is nothing more than an Excel function that allows you to connect tables with different values like a unique query of interest to us, i.e., to look up a given value in the first column and return data from another table for that specific selected row. The VLOOKUP function can be useful when we want to quickly and accurately connect two different pieces of information in different tables and sheets for a specific piece of information.

VLOOKUP example:

In our Excel, we created a list of clothes with their assigned selling prices Table with price. We have a second table with the assigned quantities of sold clothes, which is Daily Sales Report. We want to calculate how many clothes were sold and at what price. This will allow us to summarize the daily sales. We want to get the result: Blouse - 26 pieces sold, at a price of 50 PLN = revenue of 1,300 PLN.

The first step in setting up the Excel VLOOKUP function is to enter it in a free cell next to: =VLOOKUP. Excel automatically suggests what function we are looking for. We confirm the selected function with the Tab key. Excel tells us how the function is constructed and what "arguments" we need to use. An argument in each function is its component, always separated by a semicolon. In VLOOKUP, we have the following arguments (lookup_value; table_array; column_index_number).

Lookup_value - must always come from the first column of the table! In our case, we are looking for the blouse, which is in cell B3, so that is what we enter.

Table_array - we enter the range of the second table Daily Sales Report, in which we are looking for the value. This second table contains information about the quantity of clothes sold, and it is this value we want to assign to Table with price..

Column_index_number - is the column number counted from the left, from the first column, which is to be our result. Our table has two columns, and in the second column is the result of the sales quantity, so we enter 2.

Lookup_range - we enter 0 or FALSE. This means an exact match.

We have achieved the intended goal, which is the information that 26 blouses were sold. Now we can easily use this data for further calculations, e.g., - Table with the daily total revenue report.

LEARNING EXCEL FROM SCRATCH.

The VLOOKUP function in Excel is just one of many functions that are useful in our daily work. We can rely on guides from the internet or choose professional help. If we want to ensure that we master the basic functions within a specified time or if we want to improve our mistakes, it is undoubtedly worth looking for the help of a professional. Therefore, we invite you to Excel training under the guidance of an expert, where we will answer all spreadsheet questions, explain what exact matching is, when approximate matching can be used, what $ means in arguments, and help deal with all errors #N/A and #REF!.
